How to pass the Washington knowledge test
- Read the handbook. Every question comes from the official Washington manuals; the handbook page links to the agency's own copies.
- Practice test by test. Each numbered test mixes Washington law with the national road rules, like the real exam.
- Read every explanation. Especially for answers you got right by guessing.
- Simulate the real exam on the category page when you pass the tests comfortably.
Washington written test format
| Test | Questions | Pass mark | Minimum age |
|---|---|---|---|
| Car | 40 | 32 correct (8 mistakes allowed) | 15 years |
| Motorcycle | 50 | 40 correct (10 mistakes allowed) | 16 years |
| CDL | 50 | 40 correct (10 mistakes allowed) | 18 years |
Car. The Driving Knowledge Exam has 40 questions and 32 correct answers are needed to pass. An applicant enrolled in a driver training course may apply for an instruction permit at 15, otherwise the knowledge exam can be taken after turning 15 and a half.
Motorcycle. The 2-wheel permit knowledge test has 50 questions and a separate endorsement knowledge test has 25 questions. DOL does not publish the passing score, so the 40 correct answers shown here are an 80 percent estimate and are not confirmed.
CDL. Applicants must be at least 18 and hold a valid Washington driver license. Washington does not publish the number of general knowledge questions, so the figures shown follow the common federal 80 percent standard and are not confirmed.
